Wedding Jewels – Expert Q & A

Georgini necklace & earrings from current collection.

What’s the perfect wedding dress without some gorgeous jewellery to match? Bride chatted with up-and-coming jewellery designer Marissa Gouras from Australian jewellery house Georgini about the inspiration behind her bridal range and got some tips on how to choose stunning pieces for your special day. Check out her advice:

Why did you start to design bridal jewellery?

Originally, many of the bridal pieces were part of our core range, but we found we had brides coming in looking at those pieces to wear for their wedding day. So we wanted to cater to them. There was definitely a gap in the market and we wanted brides to feel that there was a one -stop destination for bridal jewellery.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Obviously there is a particular GEORGINI style that we stick to, featuring the use of sterling silver, and it’s quite classic; it’s not costume jewellery. But I also like to flick through wedding magazines and keep up to date with the latest trends for inspiration.

How would you describe the jewellery?

I’d describe the jewellery as classic. We don’t do chunky styles. It’s not costume jewellery but it is still affordable for brides, which is great.

What sort of bride might buy your jewellery?

She’s a classic bride, she wants to have the jewellery for her wedding day but also be able to wear the pieces again. A lot of the jewellery is quite versatile.

Does particular jewellery suit a particular style of dress?

This is very important obviously – when I used to work in the Sydney store the first thing I would ask customers was ‘what type of dress are you wearing?’. If it’s strapless, you can wear a pendant necklace for example. The jewellery also depends on the hair, if the hair is up you might want to wear earrings. But I think it should definitely be one or the other, not too over the top. Although we do have brides who still want to wear everything!

Are the pieces meant to invoke fine jewellery?

Yes it is meant to invoke fine jewellery. We use materials such as sterling silver, cubic zirconia, semi-precious stones and also pearls to craft pieces that are affordable but still beautiful.

Hope it helps all you brides searching for the perfect look!

Bride Goes Vintage

Stunning glove and wedding frock from the Forever Vintage label.

The Bride team had an absolute ball on the weekend at Melbourne Love Vintage Summer Show at the beautiful old heritage listed Exhibition Building. What a great idea for an expo! We have fallen in love with Vintage style lately. Beautiful dresses from the past and the prettiest crockery, glassware and table settings are inspiring to us. So many real weddings that we see in our magazine pages have funky retro touches including gorgeous hand made or bespoke finishing touches. It feels as if there is a movement imbued with an affectionate harking back to the past. This fabulous expo was a perfect way to feed our obsession with all things old worldy!

Unique, one-off fashionable clothing items were bursting from numerous stalls and our Bride publisher Sarah couldn’t resist picking up some bargains that she is thrilled with! We can’t wait until it warms up so we can see her sweet new summer frocks! Also included at the show were great retro ideas for the home, plus jewellery & accessories like Bakelite jewels from the 1920s.

For brides with the inclination to wear an amazing Vintage gown, there are certainly some fabulous options as you can see from our pics of the Forever Vintage stand’s offerings. You could even choose an evening gown to wed in 1920s flapper style or for a fashion forward statement maybe a 1940s suit. 1950s party dresses look ultra cute for bridesmaids. Even the boys / grooms are into this look and there were Vintage suits, waistcoats and accessories aplenty at the show.

If this is your style better check their website and get along to their next event. It’s so much easier than trailing through second hand shops to have so much available in one spot.

Till next time.

Masterchef Connection at Melbourne Bride Wedding Expo

Gary Mehigan from Fenix restaurant enjoys his large piece of cake! Our gorgeous Bride Grace in Bacini & Hill gown tries a smaller slice

Bride had tons of fun on the weekend doing a shoot down at Fenix Restaurant where renowned chef and Fenix owner, Gary Mehigan was hamming it up with a slab of wedding cake with our gorgeous model Grace! Note – her piece is just a slither but she was very happy to swap plates!! The shoot is for the Herald Sun to promote our fabulous event this weekend The Melbourne Bride Wedding Expo

Fenix is a gorgeous location – inner city of course as it’s Richmond  – but with the venue perched on the river banks it has the feel of being in a rustic bush setting! Trees and view of the water look sensational from the balcony and of course the food has got to be exceptional with Gary in charge. Nothing rustic about the modern funky feel of the interior though and the delectable aromas were quite distracting as we tried to concentrate on the business of  mucking around with the cake! Apparently all the brides that book at Fenix for their wedding get a free cake! Now that’s fine incentive as it looked incredibly delicious!

Fenix  have a big stand at our expo on the weekend so come on down and chat with their team at stand number 85 and there will be loads of other inspiring people to talk to as well.

Our very gorgeous Bride looked amazing in a tight, sexy, fishtail number from Baccini & Hill and a pretty headpiece from Elysian Creations. Both of these designers are also going to be at the  Expo and staring on our catwalk so don’t miss the chance to chat with the best in Melbourne. If you’re engaged and need ideas – it’s all happening this weekend 16 & 17 June at Melbourne Convention and exhibition centre in Southbank.

See you there…

Delicious cake and Gray's happy with his slab! Grace is savouring her teeny slice!

Wedding Cakes – Oh So Scrumptious!

Cake from Sticky Finger Bakery

Cake from Sticky Finger Bakery

We are cake lovers here at Bride! So it’s no surprise that we take an interest in wedding cakes! Lately a trend we have noticed is the variations on the traditional fruit cake option. Although various European specialty cakes have been popular for a while now, some even more unusual and delicious flavours are available from the new style of baker! Melbourne’s Sticky Fingers Bakery have developed a few stand out flavours for their wedding cakes. How about Vodka & Passionfruit, Mojito, Lemon Curd and Pink Champagne? Sounds very festive doesn’t it? Apparently theses style of yummy cakes are regular winners for a wedding. As the bakers themselves told us -”these knock out flavours teamed with vintage inspired decorations seems to be really hitting a chord with couples wanting something unique”. We’re not surprised and how pretty they look!

The other fabulous and unusual approach that this particular baker takes is they believe baking and music go hand in hand. So as they say -”we turn the tunes up loud and let the cakey creations soak up the melodies. Each delivery includes a little swing tag to let you know what we’ve been listening to. Song requests welcome!” How cool is that? Choose a romantic tune or the song that is your “couple’s song” (if you have one) and you’ll know that the cake has been smothered with individual love!

We are a fan of things a bit out of the ordinary as it’s the small touches that make a wedding special and meaningful.

Feeling hungry now??
