Yummy Mummies

Chic tailoring from Basquesse

You’ve found your perfect gown, the bridesmaids frocks are set and the flower girls dresses have been checked off the list. So are there any special ladies you’re forgetting about? What about our beloved mums?

With Princess Anne playing mother of the bride over the weekend and Meryl Streep watching her daughter wed last month, we thought we’d take a look at what to wear when you’re the mother of the bride or groom.

Your child’s wedding day is bound to be one of the happiest and proudest days of a mother’s life. With all those photos for the wedding album and all those well-wishers offering their congratulations, Mum has got to look her best.

Just because she might be feeling a bit old watching her little one get hitched, doesn’t mean she has to look dowdy. Mothers of the bride and groom should forget what they think the ‘mother of’ should wear and dress in what they like and what suits them. They can be chic and fashionable, without looking like the dreaded ‘mutton dressed as lamb’. Their outfit should be a glammed up version of their everyday self.

Stunning designs by Basquesse's Viviana Pannell

Originally hailing from New Zealand, Sydney design house Basquesse offers both ready to wear and made to measure garments, perfect for the mothers of the bride and groom. Commitment to quality and a European influence are the signatures of this glamorous label.

Leading Australian designers George Gross & Harry Who have just launched their sensational 2011 Spring/Summer Collections. With their flair for fabulous figure-flattering design, the labels are a must-see for mothers of the bride and groom.

Other great designers for ‘mothers of’ to check out include Leona Edmiston, Anthea Crawford, Carla Zampatti and Lisa Ho. So tell Mum to forget the daggy pantsuit and shine like the yummy mummy she is!

Warm up your wedding dress

There’s something incredibly glamorous about a winter wedding. A winter wedding conjures up thoughts of snow, open fireplaces and stunning misty backdrops. But there’s nothing glamorous about freezing through your wedding day, so if you’re worried about keeping warm and don’t want to wear long sleeves a la Kate Middleton, why not rug up in an elegant faux fur wrap?

A faux fur wrap (or even vintage fur if you can find it) will suit almost every style of wedding and frock – and will even be a welcome addition to your bridesmaids, flower girls and mother-of-the bride outfits! What better way to keep the bridal party matching (and warm) during the winter wedding season.

“A good quality and thoughtfully designed wrap is a timeless wedding accessories,” says faux fur wrap designer Helene Faye from Helene Faye Faux Fur. “A faux fur wrap is a great addition to any gown and creates a mysterious allure about the frock underneath. It also brings a touch of sophistication and style to any occasion,” Helene says.

To find the right wrap for you, Helene suggests taking a picture of your gown with you when you shop. “Vintage brides will love a longer, fluffy and playful faux fox wrap in a dramatic black or grey, while a mini stole that just dusts the shoulders and is sprinkled with appliquéd pearls or Swarovski crystals is perfect for a ballgown, adding charm without bulk,” she says.

So why not add a faux fur to your bridal ensemble and embrace the great outdoors when you wed this winter!
