Gorgeous Gatsby glamour
From sleek bobs to the beaded shift dress, the roaring ’20s was an era that epitomised classic glamour. Men were dapper in tailored three-piece suits and patterned ties, while women were effortlessly elegant in satin dresses and ornate headdresses. And with this week’s premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby bringing flapper fashion to the world stage, Daisy Buchanan’s classic style is once again having its moment.
The look of The Great Gatsby woman centres on indulgence and excess, with sequins glittering beneath sparkling chandeliers and decadent jewels dazzling as women drank champagne. Inspired by Gatsby, Tiffany & Co. have released ‘Jazz Age Glamour’, their latest collection filled with art-deco designs. Platinum and diamond bracelets, layered fresh-water pearl necklaces and a magnificent diamond-encrusted headpiece with detachable brooch, are all pieces reminiscent of the flapper era. To find your own piece of art-deco heaven, try scouring markets, vintage boutiques and estate sales. Hidden gems are often just waiting to be found and will be the finishing touch you need to recreate your Gatsby look.
Johanna Johnson’s spring/summer 2013 collection, ‘Still is the Night’, embodies classic 1920s style with flowing satin gowns, with striking jewels and complemented with dramatic headpieces and jewellery. Clean, sophisticated lines and exceptional detail create a stunning, timeless bridal look and adding the iconic 1920s veil will complete any art-deco inspired ensemble. Crafted from dreamy silk tulle, the veil fits snugly around the top of the head, floating softly down the back to the floor and is embellished with jewelled hair clasps or tiaras.
Recreating the signature 1920s makeup is easy, as many of the era’s signature looks and techniques have never gone out of fashion and can be seen on catwalks and in editorials today. Follow Elizabeth Debicki’s example, as Jordan Baker, and highlight your eyes with dark, smoky eye shadow, lashings of black mascara and a lick of liquid eyeliner on your upper lid. Eyebrows should be thin and polished, framing your eyes. Lip-liner will allow you to recreate Elizabeth’s heart-shaped pout, which you can then fill using lipstick or stain in rich, berry hues.
For brides who want to create their own Gatsby-inspired affair, look for venues with high-ceilings and soft, golden lighting, such as the Enmore theatre and Grace hotel in Sydney or the San Remo ballroom in Melbourne. And for a car that Gatsby himself would be jealous of, try Hire A Classic or Fifth Avenue Vintage Automobiles.

Wedding Jewels – Expert Q & A
What’s the perfect wedding dress without some gorgeous jewellery to match? Bride chatted with up-and-coming jewellery designer Marissa Gouras from Australian jewellery house Georgini about the inspiration behind her bridal range and got some tips on how to choose stunning pieces for your special day. Check out her advice:
Why did you start to design bridal jewellery?
Originally, many of the bridal pieces were part of our core range, but we found we had brides coming in looking at those pieces to wear for their wedding day. So we wanted to cater to them. There was definitely a gap in the market and we wanted brides to feel that there was a one -stop destination for bridal jewellery.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
Obviously there is a particular GEORGINI style that we stick to, featuring the use of sterling silver, and it’s quite classic; it’s not costume jewellery. But I also like to flick through wedding magazines and keep up to date with the latest trends for inspiration.
How would you describe the jewellery?
I’d describe the jewellery as classic. We don’t do chunky styles. It’s not costume jewellery but it is still affordable for brides, which is great.
What sort of bride might buy your jewellery?
She’s a classic bride, she wants to have the jewellery for her wedding day but also be able to wear the pieces again. A lot of the jewellery is quite versatile.
Does particular jewellery suit a particular style of dress?
This is very important obviously – when I used to work in the Sydney store the first thing I would ask customers was ‘what type of dress are you wearing?’. If it’s strapless, you can wear a pendant necklace for example. The jewellery also depends on the hair, if the hair is up you might want to wear earrings. But I think it should definitely be one or the other, not too over the top. Although we do have brides who still want to wear everything!
Are the pieces meant to invoke fine jewellery?
Yes it is meant to invoke fine jewellery. We use materials such as sterling silver, cubic zirconia, semi-precious stones and also pearls to craft pieces that are affordable but still beautiful.
Hope it helps all you brides searching for the perfect look!

Keeping tradition
As the old wedding custom goes, for a life of happiness and a successful marriage, the bride must adorn something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. But what is the exact meaning behind this tradition?
Something old
Symbolising continuity with the bride’s family and the past, most brides look to family heirlooms to complete their wedding-day look. Also signifying life before marriage, the something old is traditionally jewellery. Whether a family broach, pearl earrings or an elegant hair comb, this element is sure to add class and sophistication. If you can’t find anything, or nothing fits in with your look, a nice idea is to get a patch of your mother, or grandmother’s wedding dress sewn onto your hem. This will make your family feel honoured without affecting your style.
Something new
For many brides, the most exciting part of planning their wedding is choosing a once-in-a-lifetime dream wedding gown. Many are willing to sacrifice tradition in order to make a statement and showcase their personality. Symbolising optimism and hope for the bride’s new life ahead with the man of her dreams, the wedding dress is most often a bride’s something new. If you’re going to wear your mother’s wedding dress for the ceremony, a nice variation is choosing a second dress that represents your style for the reception.
Something borrowed
As tradition states, the bride’s borrowed item should come from a happily married family member of friend. It is hoped that their good fortune in marriage will carry over to the bride. The item also symbolises that the bride can rely on her friends and family. Often jewellery or a hairpiece, brides tend to borrow something classic and elegant to help complete their look. As jewellery is often expensive, borrowing a glamorous set of earrings is great way to keep costs down. Just be sure not to lose them!
Something blue
“Marry in blue, lover be true”. Incorporating blue into your dream wedding look can be a daunting task for a bride-to-be. This tradition was born in ancient Rome, where brides wore blue to symbolise love, modesty and fidelity. Brides following tradition can opt for an electric blue sash, or a softer sky-blue broach. Thanks to Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, an increasing number of brides are opting for blue shoes. The envy of all brides, her stunning royal blue satin Monolo Blahniks are the ultimate luxury wedding shoes.
