Wedding Jewels – Expert Q & A

Georgini necklace & earrings from current collection.

What’s the perfect wedding dress without some gorgeous jewellery to match? Bride chatted with up-and-coming jewellery designer Marissa Gouras from Australian jewellery house Georgini about the inspiration behind her bridal range and got some tips on how to choose stunning pieces for your special day. Check out her advice:

Why did you start to design bridal jewellery?

Originally, many of the bridal pieces were part of our core range, but we found we had brides coming in looking at those pieces to wear for their wedding day. So we wanted to cater to them. There was definitely a gap in the market and we wanted brides to feel that there was a one -stop destination for bridal jewellery.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Obviously there is a particular GEORGINI style that we stick to, featuring the use of sterling silver, and it’s quite classic; it’s not costume jewellery. But I also like to flick through wedding magazines and keep up to date with the latest trends for inspiration.

How would you describe the jewellery?

I’d describe the jewellery as classic. We don’t do chunky styles. It’s not costume jewellery but it is still affordable for brides, which is great.

Marisa from Georgini.

What sort of bride might buy your jewellery?

She’s a classic bride, she wants to have the jewellery for her wedding day but also be able to wear the pieces again. A lot of the jewellery is quite versatile.

Does particular jewellery suit a particular style of dress?

This is very important obviously – when I used to work in the Sydney store the first thing I would ask customers was ‘what type of dress are you wearing?’. If it’s strapless, you can wear a pendant necklace for example. The jewellery also depends on the hair, if the hair is up you might want to wear earrings. But I think it should definitely be one or the other, not too over the top. Although we do have brides who still want to wear everything!

Are the pieces meant to invoke fine jewellery?

Yes it is meant to invoke fine jewellery. We use materials such as sterling silver, cubic zirconia, semi-precious stones and also pearls to craft pieces that are affordable but still beautiful.

Hope it helps all you brides searching for the perfect look!

Our top ten favourite celebrity weddings of 2012!

We’ve complied a list of our favourite celebrity weddings from 2012. From Margherita Missoni’s gypsy-inspired affair, to Jade Jagger’s rock ‘n’ roll rendevous, we’ve chosen our ten favourite celeb celebrations!

1. Margherita Missoni and Eugenio Amos

Italian fashion heiress, Margherita Missoni, married her racing driver beau, Eugenio Amos, in the small town of Brunello, Italy. Margherita designed the elegant, gypsy-inspired dress herself, with flower-embellished Missoni silk and voluminous organza sleeves. Guests were entertained by a gypsy band, travelling acrobats and a fortune-teller, and ate Moroccan-style at low tables surrounded by (Missoni) cushions.

2. Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars

Filmmaker Sofia Coppola looked every inch the stunning bride when she wed her rock star husband in a small, romantic ceremony in Italy. Wearing a lilac dress gathered at the waist the Oscar-winning director wed Thomas Mars, lead singer of the French rock band Phoenix and the father of their two young daughters. The ceremony took place in the garden of a historic palazzo her famous father, Francis Ford Coppola, has renovated in the center of the Italian town of Bernalda.

3. Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman

Glowing mum-to-be (at the time), Drew Barrymore married her boyfriend Wil Kopelman in a timeless and classic celebration at Drew’s $5.7 million Mediterranean-style mansion in Montecito, California. Drew wore a cute and quaint Chanel organza gown, which featured a skirt embroidered with tulle flowers, feathers and a black belt to accent her growing tummy.

4. Peaches Geldof and Thomas Cohen

Wearing a crown of daisies and an ethereal lace gown, Peaches Geldof looked every inch the fairy-tale bride when she wed her beau Thomas Cohen – only five months after giving birth to the couple’s son Astala.

The young lovers married in a unique ceremony in the Kent country mansion of the bride’s father Bob, and was described by Mrs Cohen as ‘a country wedding meets Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘. Delightful!

5. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied

Natalie Portman married her choreographer boyfriend Benjamin Millepied in a traditional Jewish ceremony in front of 60 of the couple’s closest friend and family on the grounds of a private residence in the Californian coastal town of Big Sur. Natalie wore a modest, elegant Rodarte gown, which was a stunning yet simple choice, with a high neckline, tea-length cocktail hemline and sheer, full-length sleeves.

6. Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman

Following in Natalie Portman’s footsteps, Anne Hathaway married Adam Shulman in Big Sur, California after a one-year engagement. She reportedly also hired the same wedding planners as Portman!

The bride wore a stunning off-the-shoulder, vintage-inspired creation designed by Valentino, which she teamed with white shoes and an elaborate but gorgeous veil.

7. Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves

Matthew McConaughey married his gorgeous Brazilian model girlfriend, Camilla Alves in a three-day extravaganza at their home in Austin, Texas.

120 guests joined the beaming couple for their summer wedding, including their two children, Levi and Vida.

McConaughey wore a three-piece black tuxedo by Dolce & Gabanna and Camilla donned a gown by a Brazilian designer, respectively.

8. Jade Jagger and Adrian Fillary

Jade Jagger married DJ Adrian Fillary in a lavish ceremony surrounded by her showbiz family, model mates and rock ‘n’ roll royalty at luxurious Aynhoe Park hotel in the Cotswolds.

Jade designed her own wedding dress, a laid-back creation with spaghetti straps, low neckline and accessorised with crystal clasps. The white dress, set off perfectly by Jade’s year-round golden tan, was teamed with white flowers in the bride’s hair, simple jewellery and natural make-up.

9. Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan

The Facebook co-founder and CEO married his girlfriend of nine years in a private ceremony at their California home.

The 100 guests at the wedding enjoyed simple food from the newlyweds’ favourite Palo Alto Mexican and Japanese restaurants, Palo Alto Sol and Fuki Sushi.

Priscilla looked radiant in a Claire Pettibone designed gown, with high lace neckline and intricate lace detailing.

10. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

Superstar couple Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel tied the knot in a romantic and personalised ceremony in Italy.

The pair welcomed 100 guests, including close friends Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland and Biel’s 7th Heaven costar Beverley Mitchell, to the Borgo Egnazia resort in southern Italy for a week-long wedding celebration.

Biel opted for a non-traditional, custom-made, petal pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown, while Timberlake wore a Tom Ford tux he helped design.

There you have it – another year down, another year of lavish, extraordinary, gorgeous celebirty weddings to drool over. We can’t wait to see what the celebs will bring us in 2013!

Colour me pink

Brides around the world released a collective gasp recently as Jessica Biel walked down the aisle in a soft pink wedding gown designed by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture.

While the bride has revealed that she surprised herself with the distinctly coloured wedding gown design, her decision reflected the once-in-a-lifetime experience: “It’s a style the I will only ever wear that one day,” she said.

Jessica joins an increasing number of brides now opting for a pink wedding gown. In 2010, Gwen Stefani also famously said her vows in a pink design – albeit in a more punk-inspired outfit. Clearly, pink gowns are not a trend but are here to stay.

Indeed, many designers are incorporating pink into their collections while others are offering the option of adding a touch of colour to their designs. If you’re unsure about wearing an entirely pink wedding gown, consider adding a contrasting bow, belt or shoes for a unique touch.
