Wedding photography with a twist

Your wedding photographs are all about celebrating the union between you and your partner and showing the relationship between the two of you. After choosing a wedding photographer that you feel comfortable with and get along with well, creating the most amazing wedding photographs will be a walk in the park.

Wedding photographs when taken well, reflect the personalities of the bride and groom and will be treasured by them and their families members for many years to come. When you look back on each stolen moment you want to recall the emotions, the happiness felt, the laughter and perhaps even tears of joy shed at the wedding ceremony and reception.

For this to occur you may need to have a range of ways for your wedding to be recorded in time. Along with videography, different forms of media, such as streaming your wedding live, and photography such as photo booths, bridal party selfies and even props are tending to appear more at weddings. Get creative and make sure you capture both the fun and serious parts of the day in as many ways as you can. After all, you can never have too many photos of your special day!

Light up the night

Brides lucky enough to have secured tomorrow’s coveted New Year’s Eve date for their wedding will start their marriage off with a bang, taking advantage of tomorrow night’s public fireworks displays.

If you want to take advantage of free fireworks (and pretend that they’re celebrating you!) as well as New Year’s, there are a number of other days that are celebrated with public fireworks displays. These vary from state to state so check locally for when they’re happening in your area.

Or to light up the night on a smaller scale, an easy way to DIY is with sparklers. Sparklers are simple, but very effective, and make for fantastic photos. They’re particularly great for a send off, as you and your groom depart under an archway of sparkle.

Get Ready for Your Close Up

After all the months (or even years) of planning, one thing all brides say is that when the big day finally comes, it all goes by so fast. This is one of the many reasons that wedding photography is so important. Your wedding album will be a most treasured possession for your lifetime and even beyond.

Recently I was reading one of our Real-Life Weddings where the couple had hesitations about getting their photo taken. Their photographer suggested a pre-wedding shoot to ensure that they relaxed and felt at ease in front of the camera.

Pre-wedding shoots, or engagement shoots as they are sometimes called, are becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason. If you’re like our Real-Life Wedding couple and are a little camera shy, a pre-wedding photo shoot can help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, which will result in better photos on your wedding day.

As well as giving you a practice run, a pre-wedding shoot also enables your photographer to get to know you better, which will help when they’re capturing those special moments on the day. You may choose to have a pre-wedding shoot before you put down your deposit for your big day, as it is a sure way to learn if your photographer is right for you. You can even have your wedding make-up trial done for the pre-wedding shoot so you can see not only how your makeup looks, but also how it photographs.

Our Real-Life Wedding couple had the great idea of using their pre-wedding photographs in the guest book at their wedding. You could also use the photos for your stationery; from invitations to programs, or have them on display at your reception.

Remember; don’t skimp on your wedding photography. Long after the cake has been eaten and your gown stored away, your photos are what will remain. Work with your photographer to ensure that your photos are lasting memories of your beautiful day.

As a bride (or groom) to be, your head is probably filled with ideas for making your big day memorable. From unique decorations to thoughtful bomboniere, it can at times be difficult to sift the inspiring from the “done before”. And while the day is most certainly about you and your other half, you will want your guests to have the best time possible, with memories that will outlast the champagne and canapés.

Why not take the cue of many couples who are opting for an addition to traditional wedding photography by hiring a fun photobooth for the reception! Everyone loves getting a bit silly, taking photos of themselves and maybe even dressing up in outrageous costumes, so get your guests inspired to create memories with this fun idea.

There are countless options for varying budgets, but if your pocketbook doesn’t stretch that far, why not create your own? Simply source a backdrop – whether it’s a large image, a curtain (borrowed or home-made) or just an obliging, unused wall; a tripod and camera; and a kind friend or family member to click the button. Provide revellers with silly props like novelty glasses, hats, feather boas, gloves or anything you can find in the trusty dress-up box for some comedic photographs to laugh over later on.

The resulting souvenirs will give you endless enjoyment, and you could think about creating a special scrapbook of your photographs later on, or even sending one to each corresponding guest as a personalised thank you note or post-wedding gift. They’ll love it just as much as you!

Ben Adams Photography has set up their own photobooth company servicing lucky brides and grooms in selected parts of New South Wales, providing fun props, unlimited photos and prices including set-up and collection. With the suitably silly monniker “Crazy Booths”, couples can opt to retrieve their memories online or on disc. Check it out here, or take a peek at the Crazy Booth blog for some chuckle-worthy inspiration.

Dreaming Of A White Christmas

Image from US Photographer Mary Dougherty

What is going on here? Are we living in the Northern hemisphere? It’s supposed to be summer and there is snow up in the Victorian snowfields today.

This would be exceptionally handy if we had a bridal fashion shoot scheduled for the winter issue of Bride magazine. Sadly this is not the case, but for all you real life brides don’t despair just because it is cold! Sure you probably weren’t expecting such a temperature for your summer wedding but perhaps you and the wedding photographer could do a quick trip up to the mountain for some magical wedding photos!

When I was browsing the net I came across this beautiful image from an American photographer Mary Dougherty (above) and I realised there would definitely be some advantages to the freezing snow covered city streets. It does have a gorgeous romantic beauty. A winter wonderland! – stunning with an elaborate white dress, a sumptuous fur and satin gloves. We are all so used to seeing the  beach wedding here as it’s such a popular type of wedding for Aussie gals but it’s quite refreshing to see such a white, light, magical backdrop! If it wasn’t so far to go perhaps more of us would seek out the snow as well as the beach as an exotic foreign wedding experience.

Better hurry up though if you want some wedding shots on a toboggan as by Christmas day – in the state of Victoria anyway – it will be warm again! As the song goes “Four Seasons In One Day”  or week as the case may be is very applicable in this region. Whatever the weather if it’s your wedding this week I am sure it will be perfect!

Till next time..hot or cold!

Kirstie :)
