The cake pull tradition
The cake pull or ribbon pull is an old Victorian tradition where the bride would place good luck silver charms in her wedding cake for all of her single friends.
The charms are usually attached to a long ribbon for each lovely lady to hold onto when the pull is happening and each charm has its own special meaning of good fortune for the future.
This fun tradition can be an exciting little side event on the day itself when all your friends gather around your cake to see who gets what and is a little different to throwing the bouquet.
Although, you could give two lucky ladies instead of one the chance to be next wed by incorporating both traditions into your wedding reception.
Here are some of the charms and their meanings:
◊ Flower = Blossoming love
◊ Anchor = A life of stability
◊ Star = All your wishes will come true
◊ Picture Frame = Lifetime of memories
◊ Music Notes = You will lead a life of harmony
◊ Airplane = Life filled with adventure and travels
◊ Ring = You’re next, and you get the bouquet!

Summer wedding food report
Now that summer is well and truly here, it’s time to think about what warm-weather food trends you are going to use in your wedding celebration. These wedding food trends will surely inject some style into your special day, while charming guests with their personalised and unique nature.
This year, one of the biggest summer wedding food trends is the use of quirky food vans that dish out a veritable feast of donuts, ice creams, and sweet delights. Not only do these food vans look great in wedding photos, but enterprising couples can also try their hand at making their own!
Another trend we’ve been seeing this summer is the use of fresh, in-season fruit and ice-cold treats. Think pink-lemonade with old-fashioned straws in mason jars and juicy cherries crammed in brown paper bags as a bomboniere. Home made popsicle sticks infused with ingredients like mint leaves and frozen fruit are also making a big appearance.
Many summer weddings are also turning local for their wedding food needs. Localised weddings have been tipped to be the next big thing, where thoughtful and locally sourced goods are used. Think about serving some cider from a family-run orchard or work with a farmer to personalise your menu. Not only are there some great farms and bakeries to be discovered out there, but their close proximity means that you’ll save a heap on transport costs.
These fabulous summer wedding trends are sure to become a classic, as couples continue to revise and refine their take on the summer wedding menu. Click here for more summer wedding planning tips.
What are you serving at your wedding this summer? Will you be using any of these trends in the new year?
A couple of chocoholics
Do you and your partner love to indulge in a square or two of creamy chocolate after a healthy home-cooked meal or a late night out on the town? Perhaps you’ve been known to polish off an entire block between you on a special occasion or two. Whether you and your fiancé are diehard chocoholics or you fancy yourselves as chocolate connoisseurs, consider including a dessert bar at your wedding to showcase your love of the delectable treat. Weddings are, after all, about sharing, enjoying and indulging in everything you love. Include anything you like in your chocolate display. For dessert bars, think macaroons, petit fours, cupcakes, cake pops, chocolate dipped strawberries, truffles, and fruit with chocolate fondue. Fill out lolly bars with individual chocolates like Fererro Rochers, Lindt balls, licorice bullets, freckles, M&ms, Smarties, pods, Clinkers and anything else you can think of. Keep things simple with a chocolate flavoured wedding cake if you’re seek a more subtle effect.

Summer wedding extras
Excited by this string of warmer days, we couldn’t help but notice that today marks the halfway mark of the spring season. As the sunsets grow later and temperature lows move into double figures, we’re wondering whether the prime season for outdoor weddings is at last upon us. With the sun peeping through and the temperatures rising, the Bride team thought they ought to share a few ideas with you to help make your summer wedding shine.
Bamboo fans, flip-flops for swollen feet and novelty sunglasses are clever extras we’ve seen our real-life wedding couples incorporate into summer weddings. As another option, cool cocktail welcome drinks and refreshing desserts like miniature ice cream cones or fruit are low-key summer extras that won’t blow out your budget. Don’t be afraid to get creative with summer extras! Set up a summer service station much like you would a dessert bar and pack it with aromatic facial spritz sprays, ornamental paper fans and vintage-style bottles of insect repellent and sunscreen.
Interpreting the weather forecast for any given day is never as straightforward as an anxious bride would like. Choose stylish designs for your summer extras in fitting with your wedding theme or colour scheme so that if their functional purpose diminishes with the weather, they will still be appropriate for decorative purposes. Selecting extras in fun and stylish designs will also entice your guests to take these pieces home –that’s your guest bomboniere covered!

Have your cake and eat it too
As brides look to make their special day unique and one to remember, the traditional wedding cake is becoming a thing of the past.
Sweet versus savory
The wedding cake debate is no longer chocolate or vanilla; it’s sweet or savory. Once a strict wedding tradition, brides and grooms would pose for photos cutting their elegantly-decorated, multi-tiered, sugar-filled wedding cakes. However, an increasing number of brides are swapping the sugar for diary, opting for several tiers of different cheeses. Assortments of cheese wheels are assembled to resemble the traditional wedding cake. Brie, cheddar and blue are among the favourites, with decorations of nuts, fig paste and dried grapes adorning the modern twist on a cake.
Old versus new
Formerly classic and white, wedding cakes are now vibrant in colour and unconventional in decoration. We’ve all seen the rise of the cupcake tower trend. Once a favourite at children’s birthday parties, the cupcake has become an art form. With tiers of different flavours and decorations, there is something to please all taste buds. An emerging contender in the wedding cake debate is the doughnut wedding cake. Similar to the cupcake tower, specially decorated doughnuts are assembled in tiers.
Now we can’t wait to uncover the next wedding cake trend!
