A Stylist’s Style

This absolutely gorgeous bride used to work for us as a stylist on Sydney Bride magazine so we’d expect her to look fabulous on her big day! The lovely Sam Moiler has always had a cool sense of personal style and of course she honed it as a skill in her work life.

As Bride’s fashion editor, I have to say that in my opinion this is one of the most stunning looking weddings. I am loving everything about it! From the beautiful unusual and glamorous head wear, pretty dress, funky groom, gorgeous flowers, cute little boy attendants and a divine rustic backdrop – it ticks all my boxes for a memorable and stylish affair. Brilliant photography by one of Bride’s favourites – Leo Farrell – highlights the small and gorgeous details.

Her love story is pretty damn cute too – meeting her intended on a plane flight to a holiday destination! Sounds like a movie – there is hope for all singles hearing that one. More good news – even though it rained it did not dampen the day. Good Luck Sam & Johnno – what a prefect start!

Check out more about Sam’s wedding in an upcoming issue of Bride magazine. We will showcase many more images and give you the whole story…..

Keep up both the frock watching and the search for inspirations in the meantime.

Spring Fashion Season

Spring! Let’s talk fashion!  Wedding dress inspiration is everywhere! Apart from the spring fashion weeks that have been happening all over Australia there’s those footy finals season awards nights.
You may not have any interest in any code of football but don’t tell me you don’t sneak a peak at those frocks the WAGS step out in. Like all awards nights from the Oscars to the Logies, white, cream, nude or pink gowns often from those very designers that you as a bride have been checking out as wedding dress specialists make an appearance. It’s a good source of research!
Lessons we learnt form the WAGS this week!

•    Wear the dress. Don’t let the dress wear you!
•    Flattering colour & structure is the key to perfection.
•    Elegance – forget the super sexy. (Inappropriate – save that for the honeymoon!)
•    Hair should not be too severe! Softness is the key to a pretty look.
•    Don’t do a dress that has nothing to do with your natural style.  Be yourself.
•    Forget the novelty gown! Avoid the urge to be too unusual (can you hear the Kath & Kim voice?) It’s your wedding dress not a costume in a musical.

For the record at The Brownlow this week in Melbourne, our vote for gorgeous gown went to the beautiful Aurelio Costarella creation worn by Rebecca Twigley. It’s lucky that her groom-to–be Chris Judd actually won the medal so it could be showcased everywhere. Another massive style tick goes to AFL star Gary Ablett’s girlfriend Lauren Philips in a stunning black Nicola Finetti gown – I know wrong colour for bridal but absolutely perfect structure and shape – plus I love her hair! Great soft up-do, with a bit of a “Mad Men” twist.

Now for more inspiration we await the Spring Racing Carnivals! Always brilliant for spying gorgeous head wear. Sometimes quite appropriate for weddings too.
Stay tuned and keep your eyes open for those little fashion details you can steal for your big day!

Capturing the perfect image

When it comes to selecting locations for your wedding pictures, it pays to think outside the square. Sometimes the most unusual location (such as a field full of dry grass) can deliver the most beautiful image. The key to selecting locations for your wedding images always comes back to the style of wedding or theme of your day.

Obviously, if you’re having a beach-themed wedding you would have images on the beach, but look around – is there a stretch of beach with intricate rock pools or a place where large waves form? Do you want a row of brightly-coloured bathing boxes in the background or just a scene with clear blue ocean stretching for miles?

If you’re having a modern city wedding, why not scout some of the exciting new buildings or architecture that Australia has to offer? For Melburnians it might be the unique angles of Federation Square or the stark mix of black and white at the Melbourne Theatre Company. For Sydneysiders it might be the Olympic stadium at Homebush.

The best thing to do is to talk to your photographer and ask their advice. Discuss the theme or mood you want your wedding photos to evoke and set a few locations, but on the day let them guide you. Most photographers have an excellent eye for locations and light. Trust in their experience and talent and you will get wedding photos you will cherish for a lifetime.

‘Tis the season

Natasha and Andrew Dean's real-life wedding. Images courtesy Johl Dunn Photography

My life is full of weddings at the moment! In less than a month’s time I will play Maid of Honour for my friend Rachel (my first time in a wedding party!). And Rachel is not the first in my little group to tie-the-knot. All of my friends are getting married and I’ve been to several weddings this year alone. But all these weddings mean I have plenty of stories for the magazine. Including this gorgeous real-life wedding!

I have known Natasha (and her new husband Andrew) for almost 10 years, so it was so exciting to share their gorgeous black and white wedding with our lovely Bride readers.

Natasha has always been very creative so I knew her wedding day would be extra special! From the invitations to the cake, every element had her personal touch.
