The ex factor

Sarah, Duchess of York has not been invited to the royal wedding

There has been a lot of talk on social networking sites in the past week about Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, who has reportedly received the ultimate snub from the royal family by not being invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s upcoming wedding.

Even on our own Facebook and Twitter pages Bride fans have been telling us how rude they think it is that the young couple have excluded the duchess from their nuptials. Which leads me to ask… would you invite an ex-relative to your wedding?

We live in a country that has a fairly high divorce rate, so it’s not an uncommon situation for Aussie brides to face. Do you invite your ex-aunties and uncles to your wedding? And if you choose to invite them, do you need permission from your parents (or your blood-related aunties and uncles) before you invite them?

It’s a tricky situation. You want to have those close to you around to celebrate your big day, but you don’t want to hurt or upset any other family members in the process. Or worse, cause a massive explosion on the day when your aunt and ex-uncle come face-to-face!

Despite the vitrol directed at them for the snub, I can understand why Wills and Kate didn’t invite Fergie. Her presence may have caused much upset among other members of the royal family (after all, she hasn’t really been a model ex-princess since her divorce from Prince Andrew!) And we don’t even know if William and Sarah have maintained a close relationship since the divorce.

I don’t know what I’d do in the same situation. While I’d love to have my ex-uncle at my wedding, I wouldn’t want to do it at the expense of my much-loved aunty.

Would you invite an ex-relative to your wedding? Or has inviting an ex-rellie caused problems in your family? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Welcome Erin!

As you may have noticed, we have a new team member here at Bride! Erin Bull started in November as a junior editor on the mag and a content producer on our fabulous Bride.com and Bride Adviser websites.

Erin is a great new addition to the team – not only because she’s a talented writer and editor, but also because she just got engaged to her fiance Josh! You’ll be able to follow Erin and Josh’s wedding planning adventures here on the blog and in the magazine over the next year and a half.

So, to celebrate her arrival, we headed into the studio earlier this week to snap some photos of the new team, which you will see here on the blog (scroll down to see our new blogger pic and read our bios!) But I’ve got a few outtakes from the shoot I thought I’d share  with you all!

And a big thank-you to our fabulous photographer Tony Owczarek and makeup artist Kim Tavares from Celebrity Hair & Makeup for making us look so beautiful, and to Lilly Pad Florist for the gorgeous bouquets!

Erin, Kirstie and I hard at work!

If you look carefully at the final picture you’ll see Kirstie holding the new issue of Melbourne Bride which goes on sale in two weeks! Make sure you keep an eye out for it in your local newsagency in March!

Fashion Week And Royal Weddings!

Well it’s fashion week in Melbourne at the moment and it’s also fashion week at Bride!

Melbourne Bride Fashion Shoot image Tony Owczarek

We have been having an exciting time shooting exceptionally beautiful  gowns for our June issue. (see our fab team in the studio – hair and make up Kim Tavares and stylist Philip Boon Melbourne Bride Fashion Shoot image Tony Owczarek) As we have been  snapping away our conversation frequently turns to the upcoming royal nuptials as everyone on the creative team has an opinion about styles of wedding dress that would be perfect for Princess Kate! As we change our models from one gorgeous gown into the next, we ask ourselves is this her style?? Imagine all that you would have to take into consideration if you were her. It’s hard enough for us regular brides without the pressure of years of royal tradition, royal etiquette, public expectation, fashion world’s expectation and the knowledge that so many eyes would be on you – a worldwide audience! eeeek! So the upshot from us is that we have narrowed it down.

It has to be :

  • A modern, cutting edge look (because Kate Middleton is young and this is the new breed of royalty)
  • Have a touch of Vintage (goes without saying – a nod to tradition has to come into it!)
  • A current British designer. (rule Britannia! It has to come from the empire)

We can’t wait! More opinion and fashion news soon,

Kirstie :)
