Tunes for your wedding

With my cousin about to tie-the-knot, wedding songs have been top of mind lately. I am a complete 80s love song tragic when it comes to music, so I have had a few very soppy suggestions for her wedding music.

I just think there is something very soulful and romantic about a slow song. A song with heart and passion and meaning. But for me, it has to be slow. And maybe have a little country twang.

Of course, music is very subjective. You should choose a song or songs that resonates with you and your partner. Maybe it’s the song that was playing on your first date, or one that you both had a ball singing along to during a long car ride. Maybe it’s a song that makes you both laugh (0r cry).

There are plenty of avenues to include music into your wedding day. There’s the walk down the aisle, music to play during the service, the walk back up the aisle, or while you are signing the register. There’s also your wedding dance and maybe even a mother/son father/daughter dance?

As a wedding magazine editor, I have become slightly obsessed with wedding songs. Every time I hear something that would work well in a wedding scenario I write it down. Which is a good way to start if you’re trying to think of music for your wedding. You can also buy CDs or download wedding music-specific tracks on iTunes to help you with your planning.

And to get you started, here are a couple of my favourites:

We are Man and Wife by Michelle Featherstone -  http://tinysong.com/jqPx

Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks – http://tinysong.com/EVK4

Fallen by Lauren Wood – http://tinysong.com/4AON

Songbird by Eva Cassidy – http://tinysong.com/bzZ

What are your favourite wedding songs, or what song will you play at your wedding? Tell us about it in the comments section.

The perfect girl’s day out

For the perfect girl's day out, treat yourself to a Yarra Valley Winery Tour.

I have to admit I’m not the biggest drinker, actually not even close. But yesterday I made an exception and, along with my five best friends, headed to the hills for the Yarra Valley Winery Tour.

The tour group boarded the bus in Melbourne just before 10am, but being suburban girls living in Melbourne’s outer east, which is much closer to the Yarra Valley than the CBD, we met our fellow wine drinkers at the first stop, Fergusson Winery.

A beautiful location with a rustic charm, we were treated to a delicious roast beef meal and a couple of bottles of Fergusson’s finests. After lunch, we headed downstairs to the wine tasting area and chose a bottle of pink moscato (our favourite wine of the day) to enjoy out on the deck.

After lapping up the sun, we boarded the bus and headed to Coldstream and our second stop of the tour, Rochford Wines. Perhaps one of the most reputable wineries in the Yarra Valley, Rochford offers a wide variety of wines, delicious meals and its popular A Day on the Green concert events, attracting huge Australian and international performers including Lionel Richie, Missy Higgins and Rob Thomas in previous years. It was also announced Victoria’s Premier Destination at the 2010 Victorian Tourism Awards.

Upon arrival, we were treated to a short lesson on wine tasting (trust me, there’s a lot more to it than just swirling the glass) before checking out Rochford’s art exhibition, gift shop and more wine tasting! Here, my girlfriends and I enjoyed a bottle of 2010 Latitude Chard (Late Pick) under the outdoor marquee.

Our third and final stop was Domaine Chandon – a beautiful winery with lush gardens and stunning views. We began with a 30-minute tour, where we learnt a number of interesting facts along the way – did you know the correct way to pronounce Moet & Chandon is to sound out the ‘T’ in Moet? So next time you hear someone leave off the ‘T’, we were told, make sure you tell them they’re wrong!

Following the tour, we enjoyed some delectable foods from the restaurant on the outside patio area, taking in the breathtaking views of the vines and the Dandenongs, before heading home.

It was a fantastic day spent with my best gals, and would make for a wonderful hen’s day or pre-wedding celebration. You can find out more details at Yarra Valley Winery Tours.

Beautiful Bouquets

Mandalay Flowers, Double Bay

In the fashion shoots featured in our current Bride magazine, we got to team some beautiful flowers with our stunning frocks. What I love is the complete simplicity of the green and white blooms.  Uncomplicated in terms of choice and yet they are so very elegant. Even though I love coloured stems and if your wedding theme is all about a particular colour then it’s great to have the flowers beautifully matching but I always find the fresh beauty of white, cream, a touch of buttercup yellow to be my favourite.

Here’s some gorgeous examples below and for more ideas check our Flowers section on Bride’s website.

Elizabeth Taylor 1932-2011

Today, people from all over the world are mourning the death of a screen legend. Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor died yesterday aged 79 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, where she was being treated for symptoms of congestive heart failure.

While the English-born actress will be remembered for her talent, beauty, her advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS and even her close friendship with the ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson, her eight marriages to seven different men is undoubtedly a stand-out.

Despite her multiple nuptials, brides everywhere have drawn inspiration from the violet-eyed beauty for their own weddings. We take a look back at the bride that was Elizabeth Taylor.
