Trick or Treat
Today is October 31, which is of course Halloween! If you’re planning to say ‘I do’ around this fun and spooky time, you could use the holiday as inspiration for your wedding theme. You could incorporate all things ghoulish into your big day in a big way, or just give a subtle nod to the holiday.
To embrace the spooky darkness of Halloween in all its glory you could start with a dramatic black gown à la Vera Wang. A great location choice for a wedding around Halloween would be an old historic mansion or a heritage building. Guests could join in the fun by coming dressed in costume.
Or if you’d rather incorporate just a touch of Halloween you can include pumpkin inspired orange or moody black into your colour scheme. Fitting and yummy bomboniere for a Halloween wedding could be toffee apples or trick or treat bags full of candy. Enjoy our holiday themed wedding inspiration and have a Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!

Lip service
Before beginning, I have a confession to make! I hadn’t always been keen on the idea of red lipstick. I just wasn’t brave enough! And, what if I went out and met a cute guy? The chances of cutesy pash would be slim to none. But after finding the right shade to suit my complexion, I can now say with confidence, I am all for it. Red lipstick is an instant mood booster and brightens your whole look. So, now I am a total advocate for red lipstick and want to get you on board too!
We’ve seen a trend in beauty over the years with the comeback of red. Celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Blake Lively are all sporting shades of scarlet, so now I’m putting it out there for all you lovely brides to be: try a stylish new look for your wedding day and polish it off with a slick of red lippy.
Looking for the right shade can be a little tricky, so we put together some tips together to ensure you find the colour best suited for you.
In the weeks before your special day, make an appointment with your makeup artist and discuss what shades and colours will suit your complexion. Test and trial a few colours until you find the perfect shade.
For fair skin beauties with light hair, use a blue-based shade with cool undertones. True reds without traces of orange or pink provide that hint of coolness which will diminish any signs of ruddiness. Stick to cranberry or wine shades.
Women with fair skin and red hair generally have pinker undertones, so the best option for them is coral or orange-based reds.
Brunettes with fair skin, à la Leighton Meester types, should look for deep red cherry hues. Use a matte lipstick and for a very dramatic look, tint your eyebrows a dark, standout brown.
For women with dark hair and medium skin, select shades with blue based undertones. If you want to be daring, try a deep red or dark purple berry shade.
For those lucky enough to have an all around summer glow, choose an orange-based shade, as it will compliment your olive complexion perfectly. Warmer undertones such as tomato, coral or fire engine red will make your skin look golden.
Avoid shimmers and gloss by choosing a matt or semi matt lipstick. It’ll be less greasy and less likely to slip around your lips. Also, an important tip when applying red lipstick is to use a lip liner. Draw it along the perimeter of your lips to prevent feathering ensuring a long lasting lipstick.
Will you be wearing red lipstick on your wedding day? Tell us in the comments section.

Oh Ombré!
If you’re trying to settle on your colour scheme then here’s an idea to put a twist on things. Ombré is a French word that means shaded or shadow. In terms of fabric, it means having a design where the colour is graduated from light to dark.
An ombré wedding colour palette will feature one or more colours, blending from dark to light shades. Ombré is a soft and pretty alternative to the standard ‘white and a colour’ scheme.
Style icon Gwen Stefani pioneered the ombré wedding trend when she married Gavin Rossdale back in 2002. She wore a custom-made pink ombré silk faille wedding dress by John Galliano for Dior. (See Gwen bottom left.)
As you can see, this soft fading or blending of colours isn’t just for fabric. You can use ombré colours on everything from your stationery to flowers to cake. I love the idea of ombré bridesmaid dresses where your girls are dressed in different shades of the same colour.
What do you think? Will you be using an ombré colour scheme on your big day? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Anja Rubik at her wedding to Sascha Knezevic in a Pucci dress
Summer is only just over a month away (yay!) and as the mercury rises, so will our hemlines! This goes for wedding gowns too – with many celebrities, designers and regular brides opting for a shorter dress on their big day.
Shorter hemlines bring versatility, giving the bride something easy to dance in at the reception, without worrying about shifting around piles of tulle. They also allow you to have a bit of fun with your dress – you can really bring our your personality if it’s not really ‘you’ to wear a long gown with layers of lace.
Designers are continuing to embrace the trend, so you’ll have plenty to choose from this season. Overseas, brands like Jason Wu, Vera Wang and Lanvin kept the trend afloat, some even designing a range exclusively for net-a-porter.com, which of course were snapped up in seconds!
The most memorable celebrity short dress moment in recent times, is that of Victoria Secret model Anja Rubik. Her Pucci creation was a knee-length masterpiece, balanced by a floor length tulle veil and neck detailing; a perfect example of the fun you can have when you go short! Also deserving an honourable mention is Lara Stone’s second dress by Givenchy, that she changed into after the ceremony. The gold sequin creation screams fun – and ‘let’s party!’

Also, with a short dress comes freedom with accessories and your hairstyle choice. Your shoes become a statement, rather than something that’s scarcely seen, and your hair can be left out to balance the look.
Let’s hope that a short dress equals a long marriage – and lots of summer fun!

The Great Gatsby
One of my favourite classics is The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald: it’s glamorous, dramatic and the stuff decadent diamond-encrusted dreams are made of. I loved the original film, starring a very dashing young Robert Redford, and the ever glamorous Mia Farrow, so naturally I was too excited when I found out our very own Baz Luhrman was making a brand new version, set in Sydney, and starring Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio!
And with a Gatsby-inspired wedding for Kate Moss, I couldn’t help but thinking there was too much inspiration to ignore.

The 20′s are a brilliant era for inspiration: from gorgeous slinky silhouettes, fur and feathers to crisp white suits and gleaming cufflinks, the ideas are endless. Want to inject a bit of vintage Gatsby glamour into your day? Try an elegant garden party or a decadent candlelit dinner; deck your bridesmaids out in flapper finest, add some pearls and diamonds, and voila: Gatsby perfection.
Ralph Lauren’s Spring/Summer 2012 Ready-to-wear collection debuted at New York Fashion Week with a bevvy of stylish cloche-clad models in a range of elegant 20′s inspired silhouettes, offering more and more bridal inspiration with every minute.
