Light up the night

Brides lucky enough to have secured tomorrow’s coveted New Year’s Eve date for their wedding will start their marriage off with a bang, taking advantage of tomorrow night’s public fireworks displays.

If you want to take advantage of free fireworks (and pretend that they’re celebrating you!) as well as New Year’s, there are a number of other days that are celebrated with public fireworks displays. These vary from state to state so check locally for when they’re happening in your area.

Or to light up the night on a smaller scale, an easy way to DIY is with sparklers. Sparklers are simple, but very effective, and make for fantastic photos. They’re particularly great for a send off, as you and your groom depart under an archway of sparkle.

Loving lilac

We’re loving lilac at the moment and it looks as though many of you brides out there are too! We’ve seen this demure and soft hue popping up quite a bit lately and we can see why! We’ve seen some beautiful lilac bridesmaids dresses, gorgeous bouquets fleshed out with the pretty flower and finishing touches brought to life by the lovely lilac. Your bridesmaid budget

For some brides, it can be hard to discuss money with your bridesmaids, but often it’s most helpful to be upfront with your besties to prevent later confusion.

Here are some suggestions to help navigate the dollars and cents for your bridesmaids if you’re on a tight budget.

• Be clear and upfront about who is paying for what. Will you or your bridesmaids pay for the dress? And who will pay for the accessories, shoes and hair and makeup? Make sure all parties know what they are expected to pay for before you start shopping.

• Set a limit on how much your bridesmaids’ dresses will cost. As a general rule, bridesmaids pay for their dresses if it is off-the-rack and a reasonable price. But if you are going down the designer route, why not make it a gift to them?

• If you can’t afford a whole outfit for your maids, why not consider just buying one element? You might pay for their frocks and they can pay for their accessories or vice versa.

• Once you’ve set your budget shop appropriately. For example if you’re budget is under $300, stick to high street boutiques or try department stores such as Myer and David Jones. Avoid designer boutiques that specialise in once-off couture.

• If you don’t have any other option but to ask your bridesmaid to pay, explain your reasons to them. Give them a guide on style and colour, and try having your bridesmaids wear different dress styles so that they can express their individuality and feel good on the day.

Boho bride

Let your inner hippie shine on your wedding day and become a boho-chic bride. An essential part of being a bohemian hippie is having a love of the great outdoors and feeling connected to nature, so the first thing you will need to do is choose an earthy outdoor location for your nuptials. Think overgrown gardens or seashelled beaches. Think golden sunflowers or the red dessert. John Lennon, the quintessential hippie, once said ‘grow your hair for peace’, so it’s vital that every boho bride shows off gorgeously long, wavy hair topped off by a floral wreath headpiece. Hire a vintage hippie van to drive your bridal party around in, and to make it authentically hippie enjoy your organic meal for your reception in an outdoor setting – you could even eat on colourful picnic rugs on the ground for a really down-to-earth vibe!

Going native

Australia is home to many beautiful native flora and fauna and if you want to add a touch of patriotism into your wedding day, why not do it through a gorgeous native bouquet! Our land really does abound with nature’s gifts and we’re blessed with an abundance of gorgeously fragrant, vibrantly coloured flowers and foliage. If you’re having an outdoor country-themed wedding and are hoping to achieve an earthy, rustic feel for the day a native bouqet will ensure that you’re in keeping with the theme.

In the spirit of national and patriotic fervour you can’t go past the lovely golden wattle. Wattles come in many different species and colours and you can be sure to find one that will suit your chosen colour scheme. It’s probably not the best idea to have your entire bouquet made out of wattle, but you can just add a touch if you desire.

Daisies are a sweet addition to any bouquet if you’re after something earthy and whimsical. A cute posy of daisies can be very effective as a bouquet. Add a few gumnuts and you’ve really got an all-Australian wedding bouquet!
