Will you marry me?

This morning the Bride team were talking, and it seemed we all had one thing on our mind: the 29th of February. Yes, it only comes once every four years, but you may be wondering why it had us so interested.
A tradition dating back to the 13th century says that on the 29th of February, single ladies can take the initiative and pop the question to their special man.
Now of course here at Bride we’re firm believers that a woman can take matters into her own hands any day of the year, but we all love an excuse to turn up the romance, so why not make the 29th of February your day?
Queen Margaret of Scotland even passed a law stating that if a bold lady were to propose but be turned down on Leap Day, her (clearly ungrateful) suitor was to give her a kiss and buy her a silk gown. Sounds like a win win situation really!
Monica did it on Friends, Miranda did it in Sex and the City, and Amy Adams was going to do it in that terrible movie set in Ireland. So here are a few general pointers for any lucky lady who wants to pop the question:
- The first rule of a proposal is just to make it special. This doesn’t necessarily mean over-the-top extravagance, but can also be simple. They say less is more, and less can certainly feel more genuine sometimes.
- Have something to give him – but perhaps not a sparkling diamond ring. What about a simple band, or an engraved watch?
- Have fun! You don’t have to be so serious, so use your imagination and come up with something funny – bake him a cake with the words “Marry Me” scrawled in icing; write it in the bathroom mirror with toothpaste. You’re bucking tradition by asking him anyway, so who says it’s got to be conventional in every other sense?
Good luck!

2012 Oscars red carpet!
Another awards night has just passed, which means we’ve just drooled over another bunch of fabulous frocks and glamorous gals! Hollywood’s hottest were flaunting it last night at the 2012 Academy Awards and we’ve selected an exclusive batch of gowns that are our personal favourites here at Bride. We’re always on the lookout for bridalesque dresses on the red carpet, and this year we saw a few that we thought would look stunning as wedding gowns! As you’ll notice, we’ve included the talk-of-the-town gown – Angelina Jolie’s gorgeous black velvet number. Although perhaps a little too risqué for a wedding dress, we thought the height of Hollywood glamour deserved a special mention.
Enjoy an indulgent moment and check out these breathtaking stars and their glamorous gowns!
From the Vault: Sarah and Stew
Classic and elegant: it’s what every bride hopes her wedding day will be. For Sarah and Stew, this hope became a reality in their simple, yet beautiful nuptials. Complemented by gorgeous photography by Feather & Stone, this is one wedding you’ll want to feast your eyes on!

Don’t forget to sign the guestbook!
The guest book may not seem like a very integral part of your wedding day, and most of the time people forget to sign it, or don’t make the effort. The truth is, though it might not seem like a big deal, having a memory like that is priceless. You’ll love being able to sit down later and enjoy reading through the personal messages and well-wishes. The best thing is, you can keep it for years to come and still flip back through those cherished memories.
So how do you combat guest book malaise? Easy! Make it something they’ll be lining up to sign!

What is the first thing anyone does when they see a typewriter? They instantly want to tap away at it. So turn your guests into burgeoning literary types by setting up a gorgeous old typewriter complete with ample sheets of paper. Plenty of op-shops and antique or vintage stores will stock old typewriters, and they’re never in short supply on eBay or sites like etsy.com. Postage when ordering a typewriter online can be a nightmare, so look for sellers near you for home pickup, or get your detective on and start hunting through thrift stores and markets.

We all love the chance to revert to our childhood selves, so give guests the chance to get creative with loads of paper, pencils, glitter and glue – whatever you think will get them inspired. You can either choose to provide a box, basket or something like a large old suitcase as a location for these finished pieces of art, or supply a large book or A3 sketchbook to keep everything in one place.
You could also use that big old suitcase for storing other forms of well wishes: collect some old or new postcards and have guests pick their favourite, write a message and toss it in the case. Or perhaps cutout shapes to match your theme? Pictures of the happy couple to colour in? There is no limit here but your own imagination!
Snap Happy

Another popular and equally creative way to capture the day’s memories is by getting happy snaps of all your guests and compiling them in one place. Many photobooths offer services where guests can dress up or just put on a big smile, have their photo taken and then keep one copy for themselves, and one for the couple. You could either write on the back of the photo, or perhaps stick it into a nice scrapbook or pretty notebook, and prompt each guest to write a nice message next to their photo. This way, everybody gets to take home the memories.
Or perhaps if a photobooth is a little much, you could invest in some disposable cameras and place a couple on every table, encouraging guests to snap away until they can snap no more. You could provide them with props and signs with funny messages to hold up for photos, or provide paper and pencils so they can make their own!

From the Vault: Sonia & Joseph
When Sonia and Joseph decided to tie the knot, like so many couples, they wanted a day that truly reflected them as a couple. From the church ceremony to their lavish reception, they wanted to enjoy themselves – and their photos make it clear that’s just what they did. With Wildberry Studio & Design’s gorgeous photography, this is one wedding we couldn’t help but revisit. Enjoy!
