Half the battle of dress shopping is deciding whether to have your bridesmaids’ dresses made or whether to buy them. If you know exactly what style and colour dress you want, having the dresses made is a great option.
However, if you are having trouble choosing a style or colour, or simply have no idea what you want, then it’s best to shop around for some inspiration. No matter which way you go, it’s important to include your bridesmaids in decisions about dress colour and style.
Mix and matching dress styles
Choosing a distinct dress style for each bridesmaid is a good way to ensure your girlfriends look their best and feel both beautiful and comfortable on your big day.
It’s important to remember that your bridesmaid dresses don’t have to be uniform. What looks good on one of your bridesmaids won’t necessarily suit another, especially if they have different body shapes and colouring.
You can create or shop for different bridesmaid dresses for each girl and link them together with a common thread, such as colour, fabric or embellishments.
Matte fabrics that are less likely to cling are the most flattering for women and will ensure your bridesmaids don’t feel self-conscious. Silk georgette or any matte fabric is the most flattering, and it’s a good idea to avoid bias-cut satin gowns, unless all your bridesmaids are slender.
When it comes to colour, latte and coffee colours suit the majority of skin tones, while black is always a safe bet. Adjusting the colour palette slightly to allow your bridesmaids to wear shades of the same colour is a great way to negotiate a mix of skin tones, but if in doubt stick to a darker shade, which will be more flattering.
