As brides look to make their special day unique and one to remember, the traditional wedding cake is becoming a thing of the past.
Sweet versus savory
The wedding cake debate is no longer chocolate or vanilla; it’s sweet or savory. Once a strict wedding tradition, brides and grooms would pose for photos cutting their elegantly-decorated, multi-tiered, sugar-filled wedding cakes. However, an increasing number of brides are swapping the sugar for diary, opting for several tiers of different cheeses. Assortments of cheese wheels are assembled to resemble the traditional wedding cake. Brie, cheddar and blue are among the favourites, with decorations of nuts, fig paste and dried grapes adorning the modern twist on a cake.
Old versus new
Formerly classic and white, wedding cakes are now vibrant in colour and unconventional in decoration. We’ve all seen the rise of the cupcake tower trend. Once a favourite at children’s birthday parties, the cupcake has become an art form. With tiers of different flavours and decorations, there is something to please all taste buds. An emerging contender in the wedding cake debate is the doughnut wedding cake. Similar to the cupcake tower, specially decorated doughnuts are assembled in tiers.
Now we can’t wait to uncover the next wedding cake trend!
